Kannada actress Ranya Rao has been at the center of a significant gold smuggling case following her arrest at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport on March 4, 2025. Authorities apprehended her for attempting to smuggle 14.2 kilograms of gold, valued at approximately ₹12.56 crore, from Dubai to India.
Details of the Incident
Upon her arrival from Dubai, officials from the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) intercepted Rao based on specific intelligence regarding her possession of undeclared gold. Subsequent searches at her residence led to the discovery of additional gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash.
Modus Operandi
During interrogation, Rao admitted that this was her first attempt at smuggling gold. She revealed that she learned concealment techniques by watching YouTube videos. At Dubai Airport, she purchased crepe bandages and scissors, using them in a restroom to fasten the gold bars to her body.
Associates and Connections
Investigations uncovered Rao’s association with Tarun Raju, grandson of the owner of Atria Hotel in Bengaluru. Authorities suspect that Raju collaborated with Rao in the smuggling operation, leading to his arrest. Despite their friendship reportedly weakening after Rao’s marriage to architect Jatin Hukkeri in November 2024, they allegedly continued their illicit activities.
Government and Legal Actions
The Karnataka government initially ordered the Crime Investigation Department (CID) to probe potential lapses by police officers at the airport concerning Rao’s case. However, this directive was later withdrawn. Additionally, a Bengaluru court has reserved its decision on Rao’s bail plea for March 14, amid allegations of procedural lapses during her arrest, which the DRI disputes.
Family Ties Under Scrutiny
Rao’s familial connections have come under scrutiny, as she is the stepdaughter of Karnataka Director General of Police (DGP) K. Ramachandra Rao. This relationship has raised questions about potential influences and the extent of her involvement in the smuggling network.
Current Status
As investigations continue, authorities are delving deeper into the network and methods employed in this smuggling operation. Rao remains in custody, with further legal proceedings pending.
