Vivian Wilson, the 20-year-old daughter of Elon Musk and author Justine Wilson, has opened up about the stark contrast between her parents’ reactions when she came out as transgender in 2020. In a recent interview with Teen Vogue, Vivian candidly discussed the emotional challenges she faced and the differing levels of support from each parent.
According to Vivian, her mother Justine was immediately accepting and encouraging of her transition. She revealed that Justine had already suspected the truth, making the moment more of a confirmation than a shocking revelation.
“She kind of pieced it together,” Vivian recalled. “So when I came out, she pretended to be slightly surprised for 30 seconds and then was like, ‘Yeah, honey. Okay.'”
The ease with which her mother embraced her identity was a stark contrast to her experience with Musk. “He was not as supportive as my mom,” Vivian stated bluntly. She described their relationship as distant, noting that they had not spoken for months before she sought gender-affirming medical care.
Despite this estrangement, Vivian was still legally required to obtain her father’s consent for medical treatments such as hormone blockers and hormone replacement therapy. This bureaucratic hurdle only added to her frustration. “First of all, I had not talked to him in months—in months—so I had to get f*****g parental consent to get testosterone blockers and [hormone replacement therapy],” she recounted.
Vivian detailed the emotional turmoil she experienced in the months leading up to her coming out. “It was 11:00 p.m., and I was like, I know for a fact I am trans. I had known for a few months at that point, and I was like, I cannot f—— do this anymore.”
She described experiencing severe distress, particularly as puberty progressed. “That was the point where everything in my life was completely falling apart. I was constantly having mental breakdowns in the middle of class,” she said. “I could not get through days. I didn’t want to wake up, I didn’t want to do anything. I just wanted to rot, pretty much.”
Reflecting on her journey, Vivian admitted she regretted the way she initially shared her identity with her mother. “I do regret that,” she said. “If I were to do it again, [my mom] deserves to be the first one to know.”
Estrangement from Elon Musk
Since coming out, Vivian has had no contact with Musk, who has publicly expressed skepticism about gender-affirming medical care for minors. Musk has even claimed that he was “tricked” into consenting to Vivian’s medical transition at 16—an assertion she has strongly denied.
In a separate interview with NBC News, Vivian pushed back against her father’s claim, calling it a “lie.” She also reflected on her childhood, emphasizing that Musk was only present “about 10% of the time.”
Despite her complicated relationship with Musk, Vivian remains grateful for her mother’s unwavering support. “She’s been supportive of the choices that I have made in college, about being public. She kind of was like, ‘Well, I can’t stop you, so whatever.’”
While the road has not been easy, Vivian is determined to live her truth, bolstered by the love and acceptance of those who stand by her.
